Soy Candles – Container

Materials:

  • Container
  • Scale
  • Wick – size depends on the container size. If more than 4″ wide, you will need 2 wicks
  • Wick Sticker
  • Wick Stabilizer (or Popsicle Stick)
  • Wax Melting Pot
  • Pot for hot water
  • Thermometer
  • Fragrance measuring cup (small cylinder)
  • Soy Wax Flakes – enough to fill your container twice
  • Color block (optional)
  • Fragrance Oil – 10% of the weight of your flakes in ounces
    • Example – if you weigh out 23.6 ounces of wax, you need 2.36 ounces of Fragrance Oil

Directions:

  • Heat oven to 170 Degrees – this is the warming setting
    • Place cookie sheet inside over for containers to warm on
  • Start heating water in pot – set burner to medium heat
  • Weigh out wax
    • Place melting pot on scale and zero out
    • Scoop wax with container
      • You’ll do two full scoops of wax flakes
    • Write down the weight in ounces so you remember
  • Wipe out container with paper towel and place inside oven on cookie sheet
  • Place Melting Pot full of wax in the pot of hot water
  • Add thermometer and monitor heat
  • Measure wax color – 1 block will color a full pound (16 ounces) of wax
    • Color variation is completely subjective – more color = stronger/deeper final product
  • Measure Fragrance – you need 10% of the weight of the wax flakes in ounces of fragrance
  • At 185 Degrees F, add the color and stir
  • When color is completely melted, remove melting pot from heat and stir/monitor
  • At 175 Degrees F, add fragrance and stir
  • Continue to Monitor heat and stir every 5 minutes or so to keep the fragrance from settling
  • While wax is cooling, place wick sticker on bottom of chosen wick(s) and stage in another room for wax pour
  • At 135 Degrees F, pull container from oven and place in the room where you plan to let your candle set
  • Remove the paper from the wick sticker and place your wick(s) on the bottom of your container
    • Use a knife to apply pressure without burning your hand
  • Use Wick Stabilizer or Popsicle stick and tape to hold the wick in place
  • At 125-130 Degrees F, do a final stir of the wax, remove the spoon and pour wax into container
  • Wipe out the Melting Pot with a paper towel
  • Allow candle to set for a full 4 hours before picking up/moving
  • Trim wick to 1/4″ height
